Official Rules:


Photographers of all ages are invited to enter their best high resolution images celebrating our community in the 2017 City of Westbrook Photography Contest. The contest will run between June 15, 2017 and September 30, 2017. Entering is easy, free and by email.  For more information contact Tina Radel at 207-854-9105 Ext. 1234 or  

Please submit files no larger than 20MB at the time of entry. Higher resolution files of at least 240 dpi/ppi will be requested should an entry be selected as a semi-finalist or for use in our citywide publications.

CRITERIA: The mission of the contest is to celebrate the City of Westbrook, therefore all photos entered must be taken within our city limits.  Photos taken of locations outside the City of Westbrook will be disqualified, as will low resolution images that cannot be well reproduced in printed materials or high definition video. Be sure to set your camera or smart phone settings at the highest possible resolution for best results.

JUDGING: Judges will select images that best depict Westbrook in a positive and aesthetically pleasing manner.  Judges will evaluate on 1) Originality 2) Technical Excellence 3) Composition 4) Artistic Merit 5) Overall Impact.  

All contest entries are eligible and subject to be featured in citywide publications of electronic media, print or broadcast including those that are not awarded a prize. 

SUGGESTED CATEGORIES: Capture Westbrook’s beautiful environment, the river, historical architecture, active people and vibrant community life, and submit your favorite photographs. Suggested categories include but are not limited to:

Environment—river, trails & wildlife scenes,

Culture & Community—children & adults in sports & arts activities & at special events,

Downtown – activities, businesses, park, river walk (please provide location release),

Architecture—urban design, cityscapes, landmarks & infrastructure


1st Place is a $100 Visa gift card and a 6-month all-inclusive pass to the Westbrook Community Center (Pass valued at $216). The pass is good for all applicable fitness and pool programs. 

2nd Place is a $75 gift card

3rd Place $50 gift card.

Three Honorable mentions will each receive a $25 gift card.

All entries whether awarded a prize or not are subject to use in citywide publications.

IMAGE REQUIREMENTS: Be sure to set your camera or smart phone settings at the highest possible resolution for best results. Submitted photographs must have a file size of no more than 20 MB per image file. The recommended file format is JPEG or TIFF, at least 2200 pixels wide. Please retain a high-resolution version of your photograph(s) in your personal files - minimum of 300 dpi and 3,000 pixels on the longest side. Semi-finalists will be asked to re-submit higher resolution photos as needed. Mobile photographs must be submitted at their highest resolution. You may be asked to submit a location release and talent release if your image requires permission or includes minors. Forms can be requested at and uploaded at the time of your submission. If your image is selected you will also be asked to submit a signed version of this form. You may attach this as a PDF at the time of your submission.

RENAME YOUR FILES: File names generated by the digital camera or scan should be RENAMED with photographer’s first initial, last name and a one or two-word description Example: Tradel_RiverbankPark.jpeg 

Please submit the image only--do not embed captions, words, watermarks or photographer's name on the image. The city will credit the photographer's photo credit to any image it uses using a standard format.

*SUBMIT YOUR PHOTOS BY EMAIL: Entering is easy and free! Limit: up to 5 entries (emails) per contestant. Send only ONE image file per email AS AN ATTACHMENT (do not embed image files in the message area) and send to: with the subject line #Photo Contest Entry#

*By submitting entries, the contestant acknowledges and agrees to the terms of the contest ENTRY AGREEMENT (read terms below).


In submitting the attached photo(s) (PHOTO) to the City of Westbrook (CITY) and participating in the City of Westbrook Photo Contest I (we), (CONTESTANT), hereby warrant and agree to the following:

CONTESTANT warrants to CITY that he/she has lawful ownership rights to the PHOTO and affirms the PHOTO is the result of CONTESTANT'S sole artistic efforts unless otherwise stated above as a collaboration.

Except as otherwise disclosed in writing to the CITY, the PHOTO is unique and original and does not infringe upon any copyright or patent.

The PHOTO is free and clear of any lien. Except for title and possession, pursuant to the Copyright Act of 1976 (17 U.S.C. §101 et seq.), CONTESTANT will retain the copyright and all other rights in and to the PHOTO. The CONTESTANT grants to the CITY an irrevocable and non-exclusive worldwide license to reproduce, to distribute, and/or to display two- or three-dimensional reproductions of the PHOTO in any manner whatsoever relating to any CITY publication or event, including, without limitation:

Public display as well as reproduction on CITY items, such as print ads, postcards, posters, brochures, applications, television programs, videos, social media and the City of Westbrook website.

In addition, the CITY will include CONTESTANT'S name somewhere on the document or via hyperlink where the photo is used.

The CITY may alter images of the PHOTO as necessary to fit into reduced or enlarged format sizes.

The CITY may use the PHOTO on CITY promotional items such as a calendar which may be sold for fundraising purposes.

CONTESTANT expressly waives any rights that the he/she may have under Maine law.
